Back to Basics – Back to Health

Many times I am asked – “Where do we start?”.  When health concerns seem overwhelming and we don’t know where to begin, the best place is to start at the health basics.  These are the foundations to our health and when they are imbalanced, so are we, and then they become obstacles to our health.

Think of it.  At school we start in elementary school and learn our ABCs, colours, patterns and basic arithmetic.  Then we can add upon our basic knowledge and tackle complex concepts advancing our cognition.  As Kanye (the great philosopher he is) put it – “You need to crawl before you bawl”.  Poetic.


In Western philosophy, there consists four basic elements – fire, water, air and earth.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine (the art in which acupuncture is based on) there consists five elements – fire, earth, metal, water and wood.  These elements make up a person’s constitution and health.  In basic chemistry there consists ~118 elements that are the smallest building blocks to creating matter.  Carbon, oxygen, hydrogen are the organic elements which combine to create hydrocarbons that are essential to life.  Nutritionally there consists of macronutrients – carbohydrates, proteins and fats – that can be broken down to these smaller building block elements that are necessary for life.  All these different schools of thought – Western philosophy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chemistry, and Nutrition – can be combined to explain the important building blocks to your health, your elemental health basics (see the info graphic above).

The most important determinants of health, the basics, are: food, water, breathing (air), and sleep (earth).  Without these four elements, we could not function properly.  The first thing we need to address when treating our health is the basics. They are the foundation in which our health is based on.  So before we tackle the more difficult issues, let’s start with the basics!
